The Oil Revolution: An Expanding Treasure
In the picturesque municipality of Espiel, the tradition of olive oil is reinvented with every drop. In 2003, an exciting chapter began when the cooperatives Nuestra Señora de Villaviciosa and Nuestra Señora de la Estrella merged to give life to Olivarera del Guadiato S.C.A. This ambitious project sought not only to protect the mountain olive groves, but also to transform the oil industry in the region.
Imagine a vast mosaic of olive groves where there were previously two separate worlds: the Villaviciosa cooperative, with its more than 750 members, and the Espiel cooperative, with another 200 producers. The merger combined their forces to manage the oil of almost a thousand farmers, processing around five million kilos of olives. Although the concentration of production in Villaviciosa required travel for the Espiel farmers, the cooperative did not stop there. Recently, it joined forces with the San Rafael Cooperative of Villaharta, creating an olive oil group with 1,500 members and a capacity of almost 10 million kilos of olives.
